What is the FEDERALS Project?

FEDERALS

FEDerated sEcurity and pRotection of criticAL InfraStructure / FEDERALS project aims to develop a decentralized cybersecurity platform based on Artificial Intelligence and advanced technologies such as Federated Learning, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and edge computing. The system enables real-time risk detection and automated threat response across distributed infrastructure nodes, enhancing the resilience and protection of national-level critical infrastructures. FEDERALS also supports privacy-preserving data processing and facilitates secure information exchange, contributing to higher levels of trust, interoperability, and compliance with European cybersecurity standards.

Work Packages

01.

Focuses on the overall management, coordination, and administration of the project. It includes risk mitigation planning, technical and scientific oversight, knowledge management, intellectual property handling, and the establishment of the external advisory board. It also oversees communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities.

02.

Focuses on defining the functional and technical specifications of the FEDERALS architecture. It gathers user requirements, outlines use-case scenarios, and defines the decentralized architecture for cyber defense in Critical Infrastructures.

03.

Dedicated to the design and development of the core platform components, including the integration of Federated Learning, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and Security Honeynets. These technologies enable proactive threat detection and incident response.

04.

Aims at implementing realistic training scenarios for cybersecurity personnel using Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). It also includes the certification of secure practices and the evaluation of cybersecurity awareness among employees in Critical Infrastructures.

05.

Involves piloting and validating the developed FEDERALS platform in real-world CI environments. It includes performance evaluation, feedback collection from stakeholders, and optimization based on real-world results.
